ADAPTIVE PRO BONO
Sarchio believes the foundation on which the D.C. Bar has historically excelled should serve as the basis of building his own platform moving ahead.
For example, the DC Bar Pro Bono Center, being the premier program of its kind, deserves continuing, consistent support. However, the current pandemic and its economic impacts for both lawyers and those who will need them most—the poor, small businesses, and other under-privileged communities—require innovative solutions.
Sarchio wants to find creative ways to use current circumstances to expand access to justice. His ideas include partnering with law firms and other legal service providers shedding attorneys or delaying recruitment efforts to provide public practice programs. Such programs would expand access to justice while offering at least temporary pathways back to traditional, post-recovery work. He hopes to inspire a renewed commitment to pro bono and foster generations of attorneys personally dedicated to and experienced with fulfilling public need.
Sarchio is dedicated to exploring such innovation, and his well-rounded experiences as a government attorney, long-time law professor, veteran, seasoned federal prosecutor, military judge, and community leader have prepared him to lead these efforts.
PROACTIVE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
First, Sarchio would like to interact with law schools to zealously advocate that service to the D.C. Bar should start the moment one becomes a member. Career-long engagement brings youthful energy, new perspectives, and a well-seasoned leadership pool for decades to come.
Second, Sarchio would like to renew and refresh the bonds and collaboration with local voluntary bars, federal civilian and military practitioners, and other legal organizations that have received less attention in the past to expand upon combined efforts moving forward.
Third, Sarchio hopes to start or support efforts to address how the law can best adapt and function in the current crisis and beyond. As we learn the lessons of how remote training, witness examination, and other technological solutions can help lawyers, courts, litigants and others in the legal system during this time of crisis, Sarchio is committed to identifying and expanding upon those approaches that also can help improve access to and administration of justice in the future.
